Summer 2009: Summer Hairstyles

What's up Fabulous people?!

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. The heat is definitely on in Nashville! It's been close to 100 degrees these past few weeks, and it doesn't seem to be slowing us down. Everyone wants to be in a pool, or at a nearby theme park, or maybe in their backyard for a BBQ.

Ms. Lyssa has given us many different clothing choices for the summer. We know how to look good, and feel cool at the same time. The next question is, how do we fix our hair?

Whether you're black or white, or in between, we women are constantly trying to keep out hair from making us feel hot and uncomfortable, but still look cute. Sometimes African-American women want to go to the beach or the pool, but have problems keeping their hair in check, both before, and after it gets wet. Here are some simple hairstyles you can try at home, or with your hairstylist. These styles will keep you cute, and carefree, the entire summer.

Micro-Braids are perfect for the summer! You can go swimming and pull your braids in a ponytail, worry free. You don't have to fret about what your hair is going to look like when you get out of the water... (lol) and the braids last for months! (with the occasional tightening process). In addition, ladies with relaxed hair, can use this style to protect your hair from sun damage during the summer.

So many of my friends are have natural hair (not chemically straightened). This style keeps you looking trendy, all while keeping your hair out of your face and neck. So you're keeping cool, and all eyes are on your cute new do'. If you are like me, and you're hair is relaxed, you can try this style as well. Pull your curls up into a natural Mohawk type style. Ladies with relaxers...try a roller set first, and then you can have a curly Mohawk too!

If you have long hair, you are a candidate for the style shown above, the French Braid. This trend is more popular since The Hills star, Lauren Conrad, wore her hair like this on the show. You can play with french braids in so many different ways. Try pigtails, or just one braid on the side. Either way, this flirty and fun hairstyle can be worn with your favorite summer dress, keeping you looking fabulous and feeling cool at the same time.

Don't forget about the ponytail. If all else fails...put your hair in a ponytail or a bun. You can never go wrong with a ponytail. You can wear it up or down...either way, this never goes out of style.

Please remember that confidence is the most important part of a summer do', If you like it, and you feel good, others will like it too.

Stay Fabulous!

Trend Alert: Boyfriend Blazer

It's always good to get the next season's look ready - this year men's style will be of uber-importance - so you have to get one of these in your wardrobe. It's so reminiscent of high-school days - at the dance - when at the end of the night, you would wear your boyfriend's coat to the car/limo. Also, you can start rocking the oh-so-fly tuxedo style men's blazer during the summer.

The Boyfriend Blazer

Pair your cute new 2-button or 1-button blazer with a flirty skirt and boots or work your wardrobe willingness by slipping on a pair of trendy harem pants. Also, you can rock you blazer with or without a shirt underneath -dare to be different, but remember to accessorize so you won't look dated. Too much shoulder pads or too over sized will make you look like an extra from a cheesy 80's movie.

Above, are some reasonably priced blazers available now - click the look you like to purchase a blazer for you wardrobe.

BET AWARDS 2009: Best Dressed and Hot Looks

Just finished watching the BET awards - FabGirl Sabrina and I are still a lil tore up about Janet Jackson representing for her family. But you know I gotta give you the Hot Looks and best dressed on the show. So here we go!

Beyonce's dress troubled me - I like the design and and sequin embelishments but it should have been a bit longer to give her a more sophisticated look.

Her shoes, however, were the creative business! Nice

Now guys, this is how you dress for a summer event - Lance Gross gets the green light from me. He looks casual, cool, and comtemporary (love the lilac tuxedo jacket).

Actress Lisa-Rae and her daughter (wow! she grew up) looked pretty fab on the red carpet. Lisa's hair is cute and the dress is a good look!

Ne-yo performed so well on the show! If I knew him, I would be texting him to death - I love Ne-yo. Check the shoes and the glasses - NICE!

AMERIE looked really fresh on the red-carpet today! The dress looked nice, I would've made different shoe choice even though the shoes were Alexander McQueen. Still, her stylist is working overtime and doing a good job.

Alicia Keys never fails. She looked fantastic on the awards and she is bringing tunics back! And her make-up is on point!

Keri Hilson's dress is 50/50 for me (it's Louis Vuitton) - I mean that girl is super beautiful and TALL! Her performance outfit was a great tribute to MJ! Loved it!

Remember the Time - Michael Jackson

Oh wow! Like, I woke up this morning and it was really real, MJ is really gone. WOW! There is no one over the age of 5 who does not know who Michael Jackson is. My godson asks me to play the Jackson 5 on regular basis and he is just 8 years old. WOW!

Michael Jackson and his family were a regular sound in my home as a child. My mom played MJ all the time. I still remember watching the Jackson 5 cartoon!!! My mom and Michael Jackson virtually grew up together - she still tells us stories of watching the Jackson 5 on American Bandstand and Soul Train. They are the same age.

I loved the Thriller album. I had the vinyl copy in my room and I remember thumb tacking the album cover to my wall right next to my Punky Brewster poster! As much as I loved Thriller - I could not watch the video. It scared me! I remember crying in fear the first time I watched the Thriller video - I did not like my Michael Jackson to be scary.
After all, I was gonna marry Michael Jackson when I grew up! I think every lil girl had that thought. I remember I had the poster (shown above) on my wall, I was probably like 5 or 6, and I would stare at it knowing Michael would stay that fine until I grew up. LOL

I grew out of that phase, but the love for his music never passed. I remember running though the house to watch a premiere of one of MJ's iconic music videos. I fell, busted my butt, running to get to the TV, I had to see MJ! As a teen, with my own money, I happily added The Best of the Jackson 5 and Off the Wall to my cd collection. I needed to know Mike's music for myself. I began to love Mike's writing style and production. Back then, Mike stayed at the top of his game, regularly challenging himself to be better.

Let's talk about MJ's STYLE!! MJ had his own style - often eccentric but never failing to amaze. We know that Micheal had several health conditions that effected his appearance - but he never let his conditions stop the show. The sparkle glove - THAT GLOVE - probably used to cover his first evidence of vitaligo. No matter what the reason, he started a trend that could not be stopped.

No matter how glitter-ridden and sparkle-tastic, Michael was gonna wear what he wanted to wear to let you know he was the general of his style army. I think that was his only way to have control in a world that was so out of control. It must have been very, very, tough to be so famous, but so lonely! I know he is peaceful now.

So, I continue to pray peace for his family. He leaves behind 3 children, 8 brothers and sisters, his parents, and millions of fans. There is no one that will top him - but we can strive to be as excellent and have such a work ethic to create such wonderful art!
Love ya MIKE!

Happy Anniversary: FAB GLANCE's Biggest Stories

Fab Glance Nashville has been going strong for 1 whole year! WOW! To this date Fab Glance has had 10,000+ readers from more than 100 countries, with the most visits come from Tennessee, New York, California, Georgia, and Alabama. Thanks to everyone for reading, without you, Fab Glance would not exist. Here are some of the top stories that I've covered for the past year. These still get major views from new/old readers. Take a look:

During the inauguration FAB GLANCE NASHVILLE was the first blog to break the story on WHO made Sasha and Malia's Inauguration Coats. This story received 698 views in one day and continues to get views on a daily basis. Because I was the first to break the story - my blog was head-lined and advertised on www.buzzfeed.com.

This was not a scoop, but it still got plenty of views: Who is Rihanna's Hairstylist. My post on Ursula Stephens continues to bring readers to the blog - currently 300+ readers have learned more about Ms. Rucker, her story, and how she helps celebrities stay fly!

Nashville funny man/actor Freddie B helped Ms. Lyssa become pretty popular in the Nashville area. I asked Freddie B to be Man of the Week because he is one the funniest and handsome people I know in Nashville (plus he attended my Alma Mater, Tennessee State University). His story received 159 hits in one day! Take a look at his videos and you will laugh all day - www.youtube.com/freddiebtv.

Kristen Quintrell is an actress/director/editor currently residing in LA. I did a story on Kristen and her red carpet look during the MTV Movie awards. Well, to my surprise, Kristen found the review, told her friends and all of twitter, and I received 198 views in one day. It's very rare for a new blogger to catch any celebrity attention, so I was super excited about it. Thanks Kristen!

So, I bought this t-shirt, told the world about it because around that time it was hard to come up with stories - but everyday people come to the blog to find out where to find the Black Barbie T-shirt. To my knowledge, they no longer make the shirt - but I love it so much!

Can't wait to see what the next year brings!!

My 1st Blog Anniversary!

Why does that cake look so good!

Ok - but really - today is the our anniversary - YEAH!!! I been writing this blog for one year and it has been really great. Amazingly, people in Nashville are starting to know who I am and refer to my blog for their fashion needs.

Of course, the theme has been changed many times, as well as the layout. I have an ever growing readership and I am so happy to write, it's my first love. In addition, writing this blog has afforded me to got to several events and meet some very influential people in the fashion industry. Basically, I love this blog and plan on writing for a very long time. Thanks for sticking with me, thanks for telling your friends about me, and thanks for a wonderful year.

What in the future for Fab Glance - well as you can see, I added a staff member, FabGirl Sabrina, and I will definitely be looking for another contributor in the future. FabGlance may be moving to it's own web portal, which will give me more flexibility in posting and advertising. I will be bringing back some of my more popular segments like 4real Fashion and Man of the Week, and I continue to take your style questions.

So, once again, thanks for making this a FAB first year!

Sincerely,

Ms. Lyssa

Link Love: Dating a Plus-Size Lady - From a guy's perspective

Chloe Marshall (above) England's first Plus-Size Ms. England

You all know, I'm a plus-size fashion maven, so I was so happy to see this wonderful article on my blog-friend's, Ms. Luvin My Curves website. Basically, a young man pens his feelings on dating a plus-size woman. This is a good read for all ladies, because his main focus was on CONFIDENCE. Just like fashion, if you don't have confidence, you won't be able to pull it off.

TREND Alert: Colorful Mani's and Pedi's!

Happy Summer Fab readers!

It's officially summertime in Nashville, and it looks like it's gonna be a hot one! This Fab Florida girl is loving every minute of it. The best part about summer for me is the freedom that I feel when I'm wearing bright colors...on my nails. During the fall, we ladies tend to wear neutral nail colors, and our feet are covered so alot of times we just go for a simple french pedicure.

In the summer everything changes! Take a risk this summer and get colorful! One of the biggest trends this summer is wearing two different nail colors. Feel free to change the colors and patterns as much as you want, it's all about having a good time, and enjoying this new trend...
If I were to pick a celebrity who should be the covergirl for perfect nails, I would have to say, Rihanna has the polish game on lock. This fab chick's nails are always perfect. There are alot of brands of polish you could choose from, but FabGlance Nashville always makes the O.P.I choice. O.P.I is arguably one of the best brands because it's a polish that lasts. O.P.I's new collection is called O.P.I brights. One bottle usually goes for about 8.50. But if you're a fab shopper on a budget, you can find O.P.I all over Amazon, and Ebay for a cheaper price.

If you're like me and you'd rather experiment at home, you can always go to your local drugstore and buy the tools (nail files, nail clippers..etc) and do it yourself. You can have your very own "at home spa" party with friends. Trade nail polishes and make it fun. You'll be proud of yourself, if you give it a try. And ladies, don't forget to take care of those toes too! As a matter of fact, make that your first priority! No ones likes crusty toes...ha!

Stay Fab,

FabGirl Sabrina

Fashion Forum: After the Maxi - dresses for under $50

Hola Fashion Friends!

So how was your weekend? Mine was nice, hot, but nice.

Anyway let's get down to business. I went dress shopping this weekend and was happy to see that dresses are in full effect - but it's the Maxidress that's taking over the streets. Any fashion maven would know, that you CANNOT be like everyone else, and although the maxi is so very comfy, you gotta have a bit more variety when it comes to your summer wardrobe.

So, here I assembled some fly looks for summer dresses - all under $50!

The staples of summer dress style - Halter Style, Trapeze/A-line, strapless, and One-shoulder. you can continue to wear your gladiator sandals and cage heels, but you get a more classic look when you throw a couple of casual dresses in the mix. Plus, PLAID is still good for the summer - I know, weird right, but quite fashionable!

Another reason to sport dresses in the summer - hides any of those lower flaws that you haven't corrected yet (or you don't feel like correcting now!). From chunky thighs to flabby midsection - nothing is too hard for a dress to camouflage. In addition, for my petite fashion mavens - the maxi dress may be too long for you - but a summer sundress is great for your short stature.

So, give your maxi dress a rest - show those great calves and strong arms with a flirty, short, summer dress.

So Fab, So Unnecessary: LV Damier Graphite USB Key

Ok, this is so UNNECESSARY but too FAB. Louis Vuitton has made a 4GB 'thumb drive' for all the fab geeks out there. I guess buying a regular ol' thumb drive from Best Buy or Target is too common for fashion folks. This USB Key inspired by Vuitton's iconic Damier Graphite signature is a key ring and USB storage device in one. It features a snap hook that enables it to be attached to either inside or outside a bag, or bag charm. (source) You can get your LV USB online or at local Louis Vuitton retail locations (The Nashville location is at Green Hills Mall).

Celebeauty - The Williams Sisters

So, over at Young, Black, and Fabulous (which is the BEST PLACE to go for black celebrity gossip) I see the beautiful Williams sisters, Venus and Serena. Usually, they look OK, not fab - but today I am feeling this look. I mean, these girls tear up the tennis courts on a regular basis, and they are wearing all metallic gold to show you how fab they can be off the court. Serena (l.) has on gold harem pants - which actually look good and Serena looks amazing in her gold halter dress. Just lovely, ladies!

The girls were at the Ralph Lauren and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Pre-Wimbledon Party at Kensington Roof Gardens in London last night.

Shopping: Wet Seal has a PLUS line? Yep!

While on Twitter yesterday, I was having a convo with a twit-friend named PlusModelNikki who informed me of an awesome discovery - WET SEAL has a Plus-Size fashion line! Well, as you can see by her name, she is a Plus-Size Model (add her as a friend on twitter or look her up on Model Mayhem - her pics are great!) and she was happy to report that a pair of jeans she ordered from Wet Seal had finally arrived and they fit perfectly. The jeans are the white pair shown below.

Anyway this sparked my interest seeing as Forever 21's plus line has not been as inspiring as many plus fashion girls had hoped for. The difference with Wet Seal's plus line is the fact that it's an ACTUAL plus line - Not Jr. Plus or a couple of XL's and 2XL's thrown in the store for good measure. The cut and sizing are made for the plus shaped body and the response has been good.

The following items are some of my favorite items from what's currently available. All items are under $50! Nice!! Wet Seal's Plus line is only available Online and has no plans to expand to their retail locations.
